    Matthew Broughton
Matthew Broughton is a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter originally from Geelong but now based in Melbourne, Australia.

Aside from his graphic design and illustration work he also focuses on a number of self-initiated side projects such as: fine art, photography and printmaking. Matthew has artwork in private collections in Australia, Europe, The Middle East and North America.

The majority of his artwork is inspired by everyday life – both the natural world and the urban environment.

The illustrative and graphic nature of his work lends itself to the tonal qualities of linocut and wood block printing. Each piece taking many hours of drawing and carving. The blocks are hand printed using a 150 year old Albion Press.

Matthew’s painting style is the polar opposite to his printmaking -colourful, bright and whimsical with an almost childlike naivety.

His painting has a uniquely Australian style, with references to painters Sidney Nolan, Fred Williams, Reg Mombassa, and Ken Done. His work also draws inspiration from the Australian Indigenous artists Emily Kame Kngwarreye and Ginger Riley. Matthew's printmaking style is influenced by Margret Preston, Barbara Hanrahan and Jan Senbergs.

      • Which new trends or Australian artists do you find inspiring at the moment?
I’m not a big follower of trends in art, but my favourite Australian Artist at the moment is Jo Bertini. I get a lot of inspiration for my painting from her landscapes of the Australian desert.

Which Australian deceased artist do you most admire and why?
Arthur Boyd. I love is landscapes and the way he really captures the light and colour of Australia

Which exhibition that you have visited made the greatest impact on you and why?
The Picasso exhibition from the Musee National Picasso, Paris - at the Art Gallery of NSW. To see the evolution of Picassos work from a child all the way up until, his death was very inspiring. So many different styles and mediums. His work became even more expressive and free the older he became.

Where do you get your inspiration for your work?
        Everyday life, nature and spirituality

Do you have any rituals or habits involving your art-making that you can tell us about?
Making a nice coffee, closing the door, put on some music and draw.

What do you like most about being an artist?
The freedom to create without someone standing over my shoulder. To explore my mind, and experiment with ideas and techniques

How do you handle bad days when you experience artist's block?
Have a coffee and do something else for awhile, play some music or go for a walk.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?
Being able to work for myself

Do you feel that you want to make a difference to the world or in people's lives? If yes, how?
Yes, to bring some beauty into the world through art, to make people question and think and go beyond the “everyday”.

What are your plans for the coming year?
I’m working on some new paintings, lino cuts and illustrations. To get more of my work in galleries
