    Josh Honeyman
I live and paint in the upper Blue Mountains in NSW, Australia. Having moved here from Inner Sydney in 2012, I now spend my time creating work based on the sublime and atmospheric surroundings of the mountain landscapes.
    • Artist Statement
      • This statement is from the series of Snow Paintings.
From the dark plantation pine forests and bare hilltops in the Oberon area, to a lonely stretch of the side of the highway, and in the cold silent parks in the mountain townships; the snow has a cold stillness, as if everything has been caught in a moment of time and snap frozen. The world is silent and empty. Trees might become much larger and imposing. Other trees seem to diminish and vanish. The colour is leeched out of the landscape. Snow covered objects become fuzzy and unfamiliar.
There is a sense of otherworldliness and a kind of "supernatural nature" in the landscape. The Pines and Oaks are very European and seem like the trees of dark fairy tales. It is easy to see scenes of 19th century German Romanticism and sublime beauty.
The Eucalyptus trees become brooding and unfamiliar in the snow. They lose some of the bleached light of a typical Australian landscape and sit with a heavier burden.
The transformation of the landscape is both sublime and transient. Almost as if it never occurred the snow falls and thaws. The day before can be bright and sunny. Then overnight a sudden massive snow blizzard. Townships get cut off and the highway is closed. People are trapped in place. Cars get stranded along the highway. The following day the sun returns and all is back to normal as if the entire event was imagined.
It also gets very dark in the mountains at night and can be very mystical in places. The combination of the snow and the night time is especially potent.
There is a belief in certain cultures that darkness allows nature spirits and otherworldly entities to exist. In the absence of light and the scarce human disturbances there is a space for these other things to grow. There are times and places in the mountains where this feels very possible. In the time when the snow transforms the landscape into a frozen wonderland this sense multiplies.
It is this otherworldliness, this mystical quality of the sublime stillness, the cold, the dark, and the silence, which these paintings allude to.
