    Emily Parker
I'm an artist's daughter. My mother's passion for creative expression naturally became my own. It became my refuge. My friends are athletes and socialites, they are everything I am not. With them, however, there lived a certain parallel. They expressed themselves with their bodies or their voices. I learnt to do the same with my hands.

I'd often observed my mother at work. With her head bent over some project, her gaze steady, seeing nothing else, she was able to paint her world as surely as my athletic and social friends did. She'd go into exquisite detail with her birds, or her foliage. I'd grown into this world of paint, graphite and medium.

I began with a pencil in hand, not a brush. My grandfather had his games that saw me sketching still life before I even comprehended its meaning. I grew fascinated with the form of life, be it inanimate objects or people, and the multitude of shadows and colour that they offer. It wasn't until recent years that I dared to pick up a brush and put it to canvas. It seemed entirely grown up to sit in front of an easel and paint. My education at RMIT and Victoria University saw me doing so often, testing different mediums and methods and subjects. The works of the great artists were ever the enigma to me. How can paint, two dimensional paint, manage to appear so lifelike? I learnt how to be patient and how to value repetition. Artists like Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rembrandt sparked a vigor in me to paint using the old methods.
    • Artist Statement
      • I love it when a place casts a reflection of a time before now. Or when a face shows the marks of experience and emotion. To look at a landscape or building - or at the fine lines or deep furrows of a face - and be able to capture that beauty for what it is, bears with it the tell-tale signs of an addiction. Steadily, the world quietens and I can sit and watch as my brush glides arcross a surface and creates something more forgiving.

So, why do I create art?

To slake a lust. To capture memory. To communicate. To liven.
