    Robert Kerwell
I am an Australian painter working from my home studio in Brisbane. My day job sees me working in a Science centre dedicated to Australian Ecological research and nature conservation. I've always felt a compassion for animals and working here has only strengthen that and it has permeated into my art as well to become (in my opinion) my strongest and most independent body of work since i began professionally exhibiting and selling my work 10 years ago.

My art has been a journey, People would ask me - "what do you paint" and a confusing mishmash of unrelated subject matters i was working on what come out. I lacked confidence in myself and was reluctant to take classes or study in case it broke what little faith i had in my skills, so for the most part i am self-taught.

The thing that kept me going despite my self-doubt, was that people kept buying my work. Most things i tried my hand at would sell quickly and all told they number in the 100's of sold artworks now. So through having to replenish the stock i continued to experiment and learn, gradually I found myself a lot more free and loose and the work i create today is the end result. I started college classes at BIA in 2017 and have continued to learn new skills and hone my existing ones since then.

While the path has been a long one, i feel comfortable in my own skin and can say without hesitation that I’m a modern wild life painter. and while the subject matter may vary from time to time, They are all recognisable as an original REK painting.

    • Artist Statement
      • Robert Kerswell (Aka REK) Began as a Brisbane urban landscape artist with his first solo exhibition in 2008. Since then Robert’s portfolio has diversified and explored a range of styles including figurative and abstract paintings influenced by Australian and international greats such at Jeffrey Smart and Picasso.
Since 2015 wildlife and nature has been Robert’s chief focus and this has seen the emergence of his own unique style.
Bird life dominates, Immediately these images are arresting and dramatic. Often they are highly contrasted with  black and white commanding the work.
With his signature bold gestural style of confident markings, the abandon of wild animals is embraced through ruffled feathers, while intricately detailed eyes and faces invite us to connect with a powerful yet fragile living creature. It's safe to say Robert’s work sits neatly on the axis between realism and abstraction. An avid admirer of hyper realism, Robert chose not to be confined by the literalness of the style and instead found a harmony between the two.  Lifelike details give way to loose brushstrokes or untethered watery trails revealing a hidden depth of news print, patterned underlays or raw canvas until what was once sharp and alive, is now all but vanished – a case of art imitating life.
Robert has exhibited consistently in Brisbane and the Gold Coast since 2008. He has always used his work to support and raise awareness for various charities, he has donated Dozens of paintings over the years to raise funds for The Prince Charles Hospital ICU, The RBWH foundation, Perry Cross Foundation and The Fig Tree children to name just a few.
