Half Chinese and half English, born in Nigeria and now living in Cape Town, Shui-Lyn White was brought up on poetry, music and art in the middle of the savannah, triangulated between three world influences in culture, thinking and the arts, Western and African. After studying printmaking with South African master printer, Christiaan Diedericks, she set up her own studio dedicated to the art of the monotype. A background of mixed cultures combined with family histories mired in migration, exile and war sparked a lifelong curiosity into the role of belonging in the development and destruction of the individual and society; into the validity of these imagined inter-subjective fictions/constructs such as belonging and identity in the formation of the self. The underlying emphasis in her work is to question and explore what it means to be in the world; what it is to be present; how we as individuals, and as a species, inhabit and invent the space we call the self, and how this impacts the world around us. Shui-lyn’s work is almost entirely based on gesture and mark-making. The emphasis is on the inherent integrity of gesture to communicate the experience stored subconsciously and consciously in the body and mind. The moment that paint is applied across the working surface is key in the formation of the image which balances precariously between the abstract and the figurative.” In 2017 Shui-lyn was honoured with selection and a special invitation by Chief Curator, Morgan Doyle, for the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers Masters Exhibition at the Bankside Gallery in London.
